Wonderworks is a non-profit organization that provides high school students in the Houston area with pre-college learning experiences in fine arts, literature and media. By exploring challenging subject matter and techniques in a college setting with college-level instructors, students acquire skills, information, outlooks and connections that significantly expand their cultural and artistic horizons. In the process, they also become better-qualified college applicants and better-equipped to succeed in undergraduate studies.

Wonderworks is modeled in part after similar programs in Chicago (Marwen Foundation), Los Angeles (Cal Arts Community Arts Partners), San Francisco (826 Valencia) and San Antonio (Say Sí). It was formed in 2004 by a group of concerned university and secondary school educators, artists, and parents who saw a need to offer students of special promise and ability age-appropriate but sophisticated extra-curricular learning opportunities to increase cultural literacy and stimulate creative development. Wonderworks initially functioned under the umbrella of the Cultural Arts Council of Houston/Harris County, but since June 2005 has operated as a free-standing 501 (c) (3) organization.

Wonderworks courses and summer workshops are held on the campuses of the University of Houston and Rice University. Wherever enrollment from a particular high school is sufficient, Wonderworks will seek to arrange transportation for students who otherwise would be unable to travel to and from campus. Fall and spring students may apply/be admitted at any time during the course cycle for most courses, although they are strongly encouraged to do so in the period prescribed before the course starting date.

Admission to Wonderworks classes and workshops is based on teacher/counselor recommendations supplemented, as needed, by school grades and Stanford Test scores (or the equivalent). Courses and workshops carry neither high school nor college credit. Regular attendance and satisfactory participation are expected of all students.
