This course consists of eight slide-illustrated lectures and related readings/
discussions that will explore the art and archaeology of ancient Greece and
Rome. Beginning with the Bronze Age and continuing in the Classical period, it
will consider Greek architecture and sculpture, as well as examples of painting, mosaic and jewelry. Turning next to Etruria and the Roman world, lectures will examine the assimilation of Hellenic and imperial influences, architectural
innovations and the use of art as propaganda. The course will conclude with a
brief survey of subsequent literary and philosophical views of the artistic
production of the classical world.
