Three artists of Paris, painting from 1905 through 1908—the dates have financial as well as historical values and are therefore quite precise—discovered what today…is still known as modern art.  The three were Henri Matisse, already in his middle thirties, and Pablo Picasso and Georges Braque, in their mid twenties.  They all shared the convenience of having been born at exactly the right time to begin producing their separate contributions—in each case unlikely and strange—just after the opening of a new century destined to be full of world-shaking innovations, some benign, some terrible, among which contemporary art was at first regarded as one of the most unpleasant and destructive.

Through slide-illustrated lectures and discussions of selected readings, this course will explore the history of early modernism and ensuing developments in the first three decades of the twentieth century, concentrating on painting, sculpture and architecture by Matisse, Braque, Picasso, Mondrian, Le Corbusier, and Kirchner.
